The vision was to create one of the most technologically advanced stadiums ever built with an unrivalled experience. Since planning for the new stadium began, Tottenham Hotspur has been committed to driving innovation and using modern technology to enhance the event day experience for all visitors.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has helped Tottenham Hotspur achieve their vision over the past three years by deploying networking solutions that connects everything and provides seamless access to the services and resources that fans want, expect and need for the digital age. To achieve this, the stadium’s IT infrastructure has been incorporated from the ground up, enabling connectivity across the entire venue for visitors and flexibility to cater to future demands.

Technology in numbers:

·         1,641 Wi-Fi access points

·         850 under seat Wi-Fi access points (1 per 75 seats)

·         1,228km of networking cables

·         700 Bluetooth beacons

·         20,000 network access points

·         1,849 IPTV screens

·         519 CCTV cameras

Wireless network

In order to deliver a rich fan experience, HPE has installed 1,641 Wi-Fi Access Points to provide 100% coverage for fans, partners and staff. The solution will enable continuity of service throughout the stadium irrespective of location (Concourse, Premium or Bowl) and will be used by operational staff as well as fans.

High Density Wi-Fi coverage is provided to the Bowl seating area using “Pico cell” architecture with Wi-Fi Access Points mounted under the seats to enable high performance connectivity to all 62,062 fans. “Pico cell” is a tight matrix of Access Points to ensure 100% coverage for High Density Wi-Fi deployments. The High Density Wi-Fi connectivity and easy on-boarding process ensures that fans can get connected quickly via some very simple steps. So fans will have every opportunity to share their live experiences via social media.

Wayfinding

HPE has installed 700 bluetooth beacons to help fans navigate to any part of the stadium. The beacons work in conjunction with the ‘Official Spurs App’ to provide location services to fans. This technology deployed and integrated by HPE Pointnext helps fans navigate to bars, amenities or other points of interest via the most convenient route. Using the app, fans can quickly find their nearest toilet or food outlet and how to get there via the wayfinding functionality delivered by HPE.

The beacons also enable the club to send messages to fans via push notifications in the official app based on their location and known interests. So if a fan had visited the club shop on their last trip to the stadium, the club could send them a discount code to encourage them to visit once more.

In addition, the beacons enable stadium management to capture real-time occupancy data information and optimize resources according to demand, for example, deploying additional staff to the most popular bar or food concession.

Wired network

HPE has deployed a robust Wired Network infrastructure that enables the stadiums critical services, such as CCTV, Building Management Systems, Retail, Audio Visual, Access Control etc, to function. These core services are an essential foundation for the fan experience and provide the right immersive environment. For example, the big screen displays, the audio, responsive retail outlets, digital signage, turnstile access systems, etc. are all connected via the network.

As well as deploying the network platform, HPE Pointnext supported the delivery of these services to ensure that they all operate effectively and efficiently.

Systems integration partner

Our services business HPE Pointnext has operated as the systems integration partner throughout the project to deliver the core IT infrastructure and to support all business critical services in the stadium. HPE Pointnext provided advice, design and build services on both the wired and wireless infrastructure, including beacon technology, as well as being Tottenham Hotspur’s advisory partner on all aspects of Hybrid IT and Intelligent Edge technologies. The HPE Pointnext team will continue to provide ongoing support to the operations team at the stadium.
