Boehringer Ingelheim has used Red Hat OpenShift to accelerate the development of its digital healthcare portfolio and enable the continuous delivery of new applications and services. With Red Hat OpenShift, Boehringer Ingelheim has increased productivity, streamlined compliance and achieved up to five times faster delivery to market of new services through automated scaling and management processes.

Boehringer Ingelheim is a top-20 global pharmaceutical company with a diverse portfolio that includes medicines, animal health and biopharmaceuticals. Boehringer Ingelheim’s digital lab is responsible for accelerating the development of healthcare through digital innovation: it delivers solutions that support telemedicine, electronic health records, medical prescriptions and a wide range of other digital healthcare services.

Open source, Kubernetes and containers are integral to Boehringer Ingelheim’s digital strategy to enable continuous innovation and a shift to digital healthcare. The company selected Red Hat OpenShift because it provided the industry’s leading enterprise Kubernetes platform that enables them to develop and run cloud-native applications at scale in a hybrid cloud environment. Running self hosted Red Hat OpenShift in its datacenters around the globe and Red Hat OpenShift Dedicated, a fully managed service of Red Hat OpenShift on Amazon Web Services, Boehringer Ingelheim’s developers can seamlessly develop and deploy applications faster and in the environment of their choice. They now focus resources on creating innovation for customers instead of operational tasks. Furthermore Boehringer Ingelheim uses OpenDevStack, an open source platform that provides standardized tools and applications to support rapid adoption of continuous delivery (CD) processes.

Red Hat OpenShift has given Boehringer Ingelheim the ability to automatically scale compute resources up and down, as, and when, required. The platform supports a range of automated management processes that have freed up developers and digital product teams to deliver new applications. Business users have achieved up to a five-fold reduction in time to market because of the improved efficiencies and a continuous delivery approach. To date, Boehringer Ingelheim has released 11 digital products with many more in development. For example, Boehringer Ingelheim uses Red Hat OpenShift to run PetPro Connect powered by Pawru, its pet healthcare app that provides telemedicine, loyalty programs, and other features to hundreds of thousands of pet owners and more than a million pets.

The pharmaceutical industry is heavily regulated. With Red Hat OpenShift and OpenDevStack, Boehringer Ingelheim can automatically generate documentation to comply with the latest industry guidelines. Having automated platform processes has significantly reduced the time developers spend on managing regulation and compliance.

Enterprise open source initiatives present developers and software engineers with the opportunity to work on exciting projects, contribute to the development of new code and interact with digital communities. Following the migration to Red Hat OpenShift, Boehringer Ingelheim received an influx of applications from candidates attracted by the prospect of working in an open source environment.
