The University of York tackles application delivery challenges with Dell Wyse vWorkspace

Academics and students access essential legacy applications quickly and securely.

The University of York has extended its use of Dell Wyse vWorkspace to meet its diverse application deployment requirements

The University of York, with around 3,700 employees, 25,000 students and over 220 buildings is using application and desktop virtualisation to address requirements for specialist applications while migrating its desktop estate from Windows XP to Windows 7.

The university had previously used Wyse vWorkspace to simplify the provisioning of specialist desktop environments and approached Dell to discover if the same technology could be used to support its Windows 7 migration.

Two specific areas needed to be addressed: The University’s Estate Services relied on a facilities management software suite based on Windows XP. A plan was already in place to transition to mobile devices for this work but the Windows XP end-of-life fell before this transition could be made. As a result the IT team faced the option of leaving some clients on Windows XP, with the management and security issues this would cause, or using Wyse vWorkspace to virtualise this environment. Having chosen the vWorkspace route, the IT team gained ‘breathing space’ to plan and execute the migration to mobile, without having to compromise their Windows 7 client migration plan.

The other area to be addressed was specialist academic applications such as those used by the Department of Archaeology. Industry standard software for archaeological geophysics was essential to their work, but like many specialist applications this was upgraded infrequently and the current software was not Windows 7 compliant. Again Wyse vWorkspace provided a way to deliver this application virtually – with the additional benefit of enabling student access across different platforms and at times that suited the student’s needs.

Wyse vWorkspace has provided the University’s IT team with a flexible tool with which it can address application challenges as they occur – while maintaining the integrity of its physical desktop estate and simplifying application management. In addition, better control is maintained over software licences including the ability to revoke licences and access once students have left the university.

The solution offers students and staff a complete, up to date and familiar desktop environment, with the vital, specialist applications they need.
