Taiwan Semiconductor has introduced its latest innovation in the realm of automotive electronics - the 24V SUPER CLAMP snapback TVS devices. These components, engineered for use in discrete power electronics, LED drivers, analog ICs, TVSs, and ESD protection applications, are available in compact SMC and SMB surface-mount packages.

These devices offer reduced clamping voltages and enhanced peak pulse currents, catering to the demands for lower voltage ratings compared to traditional TVS counterparts. This technology allows circuit designers to minimise component usage and costs without compromising reliability. Notably, the SMC (LSMC24CAH) and SMB (LSMB24CAH) package options are designed to streamline PCB space utilization.

The SUPER CLAMP TVS series is versatile, with its designs spanning three package varieties: DO-214AB (SMC), DO-214AA (SMB), and DO-218AB. These are particularly effective for compact surface mount PCBs, offering simplifications in design by reducing component counts and negating the need for overly robust designs. Delivering pulse currents up to 300A, these devices ensure superior system protection levels compared to alternative options.

In contrast to MOVs and GDTs, SUPER CLAMP TVSs boast a resilience to repetitive transients, suggesting a potentially endless operational lifespan provided die temperatures remain controlled. Such attributes herald a significant enhancement in reliability for both fresh designs and legacy applications.

Taiwan Semiconductor's flagship TVS devices address emerging challenges in automotive design, as stated by Sam Wang, TSC Products' Vice President. "As processor and other VCC voltages in automotive designs keep getting lower, the need for more precise and aggressive transient protection is needed to reduce parts count and to protect these sensitive electronics," Wang noted. The novel SMB- and SMC-packaged SUPER CLAMP units provide valuable alternatives for convenient drop-in upgrades in space-constrained designs requiring superior protection.

This advanced technology not only offers monetary savings but streamlines the design process significantly. Its introduction marks a step forward in the evolution of automotive electronics, providing designers with options that ensure enhanced performance and longevity.
