Nokia and KONGSBERG forge partnership for defence

Nokia and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace join forces to advance tactical communications solutions in the defense sector, focusing on secure 5G and future technologies.

Nokia and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, renowned for their innovative contributions to defence technology, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to revolutionise tactical communications within the defence sector. This partnership combines KONGSBERG's military communications expertise with Nokia's dominance in 4G, 5G, and private wireless technologies, aiming to develop secure, high-performance networks for defence organisations and allied forces.

The focus of this collaboration lies in simplifying the deployment of 5G in tactical systems, ultimately enhancing the reliability and interoperability of battlefield communications. The initiative encompasses exploring tactical 5G capabilities, integrating with unmanned systems and sensors, and participating in European Defence Fund projects such as 5G COMPAD and the Federated Advanced Cyber Physical Test Range (FACT) program.

In the long term, both companies are set to delve into pioneering technologies, including Nokia's 6G "network as a sensor," which aims to advance situational awareness and military readiness. This could mark a significant shift in how military communications are viewed and used, bringing together civilian and military technological advancements.

Evoking their joint ambition, Kjetil R. Myhra from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace reflected, "By combining KONGSBERG’s tactical communication assets with Nokia’s leadership in industry-standard technologies, we can speed up the use of civilian telecom solutions in defence." This vision aligns with the growing trend of integrating advanced communication systems into defence strategies.

Echoing similar sentiments, Nokia's Head of Space and Defence Giuseppe Targia remarked on the dual-use nature of Nokia's products, demonstrating the potential benefits for both commercial and military contexts. Their collaboration signifies Nokia's ongoing dedication to powerful, secure 5G networks and the integration of Nokia's Banshee radio portfolio, enhancing tactical operations' capabilities.

This partnership is indicative of the evolving nature of defence communications, where continuous innovation and collaboration are key to addressing future connectivity challenges. As Nokia and KONGSBERG work together, the defence sector can expect significant upgrades in communication technology that cater to modern tactical needs.
