Red Bull Racing teams with IBM

Red Bull Racing has renewed its agreement to team with IBM Spectrum Computing for a further four years, until 2020. Red Bull relies on IBM Spectrum software to manage the data used in the design and development of its RB12 Formula One car, developed to compete in the 2016 season.

Like all Formula One teams Red Bull must design its cars using computing architecture that adheres to Formula One standards. To maximise these resources, the team selected IBM Spectrum software to automate these development processes. Key to this is IBM Spectrum LSF, a workload scheduler, which acts like a project manager for this data and IBM Spectrum Scale™, a software-defined-storage tool designed to simplify and control the large data volumes needed for Red Bull’s car development.

The renewed agreement will add IBM’s Spectrum Protect™ functionality to the Red Bull team. Spectrum Protect provides a leading backup capability to secure the large volumes of data Red Bull generates both in its factory and at the race track.

“We’re delighted to have the continued support of IBM, who have already helped us see significant gains in productivity in the way we use our HPC resource. Their scheduling and storage tools have become a key element in managing our work flow and maximise our data handling.” – Matt Cadieux, Chief Information Officer, Red Bull Racing.

Now well into their 12th season in the sport, Red Bull Racing have accumulated an extensive back-catalogue of design expertise. By getting more from its infrastructure Red Bull benefits from better analysis about key performance measurements like aeronautics, to speed up simulations that are key to manufacturing award winning cars.
