Centrica gains actionable intelligence

Centrica, the world’s leading energy and services company and home of brands such as British Gas and Hive, has chosen Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP™) and Hortonworks DataFlow (HDF™) to power its data analytics and simplify the estate of its IT portfolio.

Increased focus on data and customer satisfaction has prompted Centrica to invest in its mission critical infrastructure, with the ability to reduce costs and streamline business processes such as forecasting and reporting. With Hortonworks Connected Data Platforms, Centrica has been able to successfully transform its organisation into a fully functional data-driven business, enabling the business community to explore information that will bring value to customers and end-users.

Using Connected Data Platforms, Centrica is able to define correlations between data sets across the different business units that were previously isolated and identify new data patterns to provide a better customer experience. Thanks to a consolidated data lake, Centrica will be able to meet a large number of operational requirements, bringing the data closer to customers whilst increasing the efficiency of business decision-making.

“We couldn’t have embarked on such an ambitious big data journey without a partner able to understand our customer needs and the market we operate in,” said Daljit Rehal, director of strategic systems at Centrica. “Where other vendors’ support is limited to the solution being sold, Hortonworks has shown commitment to providing strategic counsel and advice beyond HDP, in line with our business strategy. The team at Hortonworks has enabled us to overcome the challenges that come with any serious big data strategy implementation.”

Centrica has paved the way in big data innovation in the UK, having already established the country’s largest live operational HDP cluster. The company has created a strong pool of talent both in-house and at local universities, growing the in-house team considerably.

“We are honoured to be working with a business with such advanced IT,” said Andy Leaver, vice president of international at Hortonworks. “Our strategic relationship with Centrica has allowed their business to dramatically improve customer responsiveness as it moves to a next-generation data architecture. We are seeing this pattern across Europe, as enterprises realise huge value in choosing Hortonworks as their big data partner.”
