Sofware defined storage 2.0

EMC has launched ScaleIO 2.0, marking a significant milestone for ScaleIO software running on commodity hardware.

According to IDC, customer adoption of Software-Defined Storage is growing rapidly (75% Y/Y) and for use cases and workloads that ScaleIO is suited for.
 
There’s a lot of new stuff under the hood of EMC ScaleIO 2.0! This release provides innovative features and enhanced functionality for organizations looking to achieve public cloud agility with private cloud resiliency. EMC says that it is bringing together the best of both worlds with new capabilities in three key areas:
 
·         Enriched Security
Security enhancements in ScaleIO 2.0 enable customers to utilize IPv6 addresses, integrate ScaleIO with their role-based user management platforms (AD/LDAP) as well as provide more granular access for those users. Additionally, customers gain confidence knowing that the system has internal logic to validate and ensure the security of ScaleIO components.
·         Enhanced Resiliency
Data and system integrity are critical requirements for EMC customers. New resiliency features in ScaleIO 2.0 help ensure data is always available and not corrupted using in-flight checksum. In addition, new tools provide customers with expanded support options, read flash cache capabilities, as well as efficiencies when performing maintenance on ScaleIO servers.
·         Extended Platform Support
Built upon an agile infrastructure with support for many platforms, ScaleIO 2.0 provides additional support for new OS platforms and expanded OpenStack capabilities. ScaleIO 2.0 also streamlines customer operations and simplifies the user experience by expanding the functionality of ScaleIO’s active GUI.
 
Today, customers desire on-demand, pay-as-you-grow storage without the extra frills they won’t use for months or years. They also want to be extremely agile – they can’t wait days or weeks to bring a new application or use case online – they need it now, while making sure their data is protected. That’s what ScaleIO brings: public cloud agility and private cloud resiliency.
ScaleIO already provides massive scalability, extreme performance and compelling economics alongside the flexibility and elasticity ScaleIO is known for. Since ScaleIO is block storage, there are many use cases, and we’re seeing traction in three key areas:
·         IaaS for traditional environments: ScaleIO is applicable to most block use cases but ScaleIO’s value resonates highly in private cloud due to its ability to start small and enable pay-as-you-grow, always-on functionality, customer choice, and multi-tenant support.
·         IaaS for OpenStack environments: ScaleIO is fully integrated with, and contributed to OpenStack Liberty, with great partnerships to enable easier integration with OpenStack cloud infrastructure for modern applications.
·         NoSQL: ScaleIO utilizes DAS architecture but adds enterprise SAN features and provides far better performance with the same underlying HW – saving customers CAPEX and OPEX costs while simplifying their operations for NoSQL environments.
