Presence at AMS-IX New York brings Akamai first connection to an Open-IX certified Internet Exchange

AMS-IX has announced that Akamai, the leading provider of cloud services, has become a member of AMS-IX New York. This peering platform is the only Open-IX certified Internet Exchange in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. Akamai has been a member of AMS-IX in Amsterdam for years and is also connected to AMS-IX’ exchanges in Hong Kong and Curacao.

Akamai is the leading provider of content delivery and cloud infrastructure services for the delivery of content and applications over the Internet. The connection to AMS-IX New York helps Akamai optimizing its services in the New York/New Jersey area. For Akamai, this is also the first live connection to an Open-IX certified exchange platform in New York.

The Open-IX Association (OIX) is an Internet community-derived effort to improve the landscape of Internet peering and interconnection in the United States. OIX encourages the development of neutral and distributed Internet Exchanges in North America and promotes uniform, cost-efficient standards of performance for interconnections backed by the Internet community. The association aims to promote common and uniform specifications for data transfer and physical connectivity and improves IX performance by developing criteria and methods of measurement to reduce the complexity that restricts interconnection in fragmented markets.

AMS-IX’ counterpart AMS-IX USA Inc. is running AMS-IX New York in collaboration with Digital Realty (NYSE: DLR), DuPont Fabros Technology, Inc. (NYSE: DFT), Sabey Data Centers and 325 Hudson. As one of the first neutral and distributed Internet Exchanges in North America, AMS-IX New York recently received the IXP OIX-1 Certification from the Open-IX Association.

“It is great to welcome Akamai to AMS-IX New York. Akamai has been a longstanding member and customer of AMS-IX and it is very valuable to us and other connected parties that they are selecting our exchange in New York/New Jersey to expand in the US market,” says Job Witteman, CEO of AMS-IX.

“The US market is very important to us and we are very pleased to be able to increase our presence in this market together with a trusted partner like AMS-IX. We have great experiences working with AMS-IX in Europe, Asia and the Caribbean and are confident to find the same service levels in the US,” says Martin Hannigan, Director Networks and Data Center Architecture at Akamai.
