Big Brain targets SMB customers

Virginia-based hosting provider Big Brain Global has launched a new range of cloud services built on the OnApp Cloud platform. Big Brain chose OnApp to create cloud services for its small and midsize business (SMB) customers, who need affordable but very high availability hosting for database-driven applications. The new Big Brain cloud joins the company’s existing range of virtual private server (VPS), dedicated server and colocation hosting services.

Big Brain chose OnApp after narrowing its options to OnApp and VMware. OnApp’s built-in autoscaling, automatic failover and flexible support for different billing models played a major role in the company’s decision, enabling Big Brain to give its customers enterprise-class features and performance while only paying for the cloud resources they use. OnApp’s ability to manage VMware workloads was also significant in Big Brain’s decision, since it gives its customers greater choice of hypervisors and enables the company to target larger business customers with its cloud services.

“OnApp Cloud gives us the high level of performance our customers need, but at a price that works for them,” said Brian Smith, Big Brain’s CEO. “Our customers can’t believe how reliable their cloud services have become, even when they significantly scale up their business. Customers who have migrated from dedicated servers are ecstatic about the new platform. It's an instant upgrade in reliability and capacity for their hosted applications, and it's more efficient and more profitable for us, too.”
“Big Brain is a great example of how easy it can be for an established hosting provider to make the transformation to a successful cloud provider,” said Kosten Metreweli, OnApp's Chief Commercial Officer. “Working with OnApp enables companies like Big Brain to create compelling and distinct cloud services that are tailored for their customers, and we hope we’ll be working with Big Brain to keep adding features their customers need for years to come.”
Big Brain hopes to extend its OnApp Cloud with the platform’s integrated storage and CDN capabilities in the near future. With OnApp Storage, Big Brain can use disk drives in its hypervisor servers to create extremely scalable, high performance distributed storage for its cloud users. With OnApp CDN, Big Brain can make use of the OnApp federation of clouds to help customers scale their websites and applications to 161 locations in 40 countries, without having to build its own global infrastructure.
